Thusitha P. Wijewardena, Chief Secretary of the Eastern Province said that a healthy society can be created by cultivating using organic fertilizer. Mr. Wanigasinghe said.
He was speaking at an awareness program on the use of organic fertilizer held at the Trincomalee District Secretariat today.

His Excellency the President understands the importance of organic farming and is working diligently to create a sustainable agriculture and all officials in the agricultural sector should be fully aware of this and the farming community should be made aware of the importance of this and the technical assistance and how to apply fertilizers.

People in Kantale, Gomarankadawala, Padavi Sri Pura and other areas in the Trincomalee District are suffering from non-communicable diseases such as kidney disease and cancer due to the use of chemical fertilizers. There is an urgent need to save them from this and to work with determination and enthusiasm to transform themselves into a self-sufficient country through sustainable agriculture. Therefore, all challenges can be overcome by working with confidence to achieve this national task, he said.

It is very important to educate the officials as well as the farmers in the program to popularize organic farming. Approved suppliers have been selected for the distribution of fertilizer for the Yala season in the Trincomalee District. Additional Government Agent Mr. J.S. Arulraj said.

He further stated that this Yala season will be successful and the harvest will be higher than the previous season by giving the necessary guidance to the farmers, especially those in the field of agriculture who are engaged in field duties.

Awareness was also given on the use of fertilizer by the relevant institutions to supply fertilizer to the Trincomalee District during the Yala season.
